Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program! Here you will find all the necessary resources and steps to become a successful VITA volunteer.


1. Information.

Volunteers are the key to success of the VITA program. Last year, nearly 300 volunteers donated around 8,000 hours of their time to assist members of the community. Over 10,000 individuals and families utilized VITA and that saved $1.5 million in tax preparation fees and returned $9.2 million in refunds back to the community. With over 50 locations across the Upstate of South Carolina, you can volunteer where it is most convenient for you. All sites vary in the time that they are open and there is no minimum requirement that you have to volunteer. You can commit as much or as little time as you are available. No prior experience is necessary and training is free! There are many different ways to be involved as a VITA Volunteer. Below are helpful links to get you started:

3. Training.

4. Certification.

All VITA Volunteers are required to take the Volunteer Standards of Conduct Exam, regardless of their role in the VITA program. Once you feel comfortable with the tax preparation process, follow the link below to start the certification process.
